Winter Arrives

We made it home from South Dakota just in time - the next morning there was 18" of snow on the ground, and it snowed another foot that day (although the ground was so warm it kept melting, so the most ever measured on the ground was 25"). This was our first big snow of the year - there was one small snow storm in the end of September, but the warm weather made that snow disappear within a day or so. And there was a really cold snap in the beginning of October, but it has been very nice otherwise. And it has been fairly warm since this snow - high today around 60, but the snow isn't gone yet - there is just so much!

We never would have made it to town that morning - except that we had just bought a new-to-us SUV - a 2000 Ford Expedition. Although I cleared the driveway, the roads hadn't been plowed, and the minivan nor my wimpy 2WD truck would have made it out of the subdivision. But the Expedition didn't have any trouble at all. So I was able to get to work, Reder to preschool, and mom and Ruby to the grocery store.

Reder loves playing in the snow. I drove the snow blower once around the house to make a path to his playhouse, swing set, back deck, etc. We also have sledded down the side of the driveway. But Ruby doesn't seem to like the snow much. I remember that Reder didn't like it at this age either - gloves are clumsy, ice is slippery, snow is difficult to walk through. She does love going fast on a sled!
