Baby and Bee-atrice

We are now officially keepers of bees. They are such interesting little "bugs", as Ruby says. Jason spent a lot of time worrying if we had queens in each of our two hives (she could have gotten lost during the transfer from their old hive to ours), but the bees are multiplying and he sees lots of "brood" in the hives, so she's there, even if he can't find her. We let the kids each name a queen. Ruby instantly came up with the fitting name of Baby (all things are about the mommy-baby relationship lately to Ruby). Reder couldn't come up with a name. I suggested a million names but he didn't like them. Then Gramma Janet suggested Bee-atrice and of course he thought that was wonderful. Bee-atrice she is.

Here is a bit of the hive that Jason pulled out of the big box. I don't know the terminology. He will probably cringe when he reads this.

Jason wears his full-out bee suit if he's going to take the hive apart and really check things out. The kids wanted to watch so he put them in their snow pants, then put the extra veil over their top. Worked great! These pictures are from a couple of weeks ago.

These pictures are from tonight. Jason checked the hives again to make sure things are happenin', and they are. He broke off a piece of honeycomb with a tiny bit of honey on it and everyone got to have a little taste. Notice that Summertime Nakedness has begun.

Pretty fun! We love our new hobby!
