Kamping with the Kay's

This weekend we were finally able to get our camper out for its maiden voyage for 2012.  Our favorite spot is Potosi but I did not want to go there for fear of the forest fire near Pony.  Jason said there wouldn't be much to worry about but I couldn't let it go.  So, we looked around on the web until we found another gem, Toll Mountain Campground, west of Whitehall.

Upon getting there we had to pop up the camper.  Teamwork makes light work!

And Jason lit the water heater.  I tell you, we were roughing it.

The theme of the weekend was Ruby grabbing the camera when we weren't looking.  These pictures weren't half bad so I kept them as a reminder of what our camper looks like:

This campground was perfect.  Only 7 campsites - there were some guys at one but they left, and another family at another, and that was it!  It felt like we had this little valley all to ourselves.  Our campsite was awesome.  You had to walk up a little hill from our camper to get to the fire pit and picnic table, and the place was covered in huge rocks:

Last summer the wind took the awning off, and we never got to fixing it.  Jason planned ahead this trip and got some UV-resistant heavy-duty thread and we took turns stitching it back to the plastic strip that screws to the camper roof.  We didn't finish but we made great progress.  It will give us something to do on our next trip!

Despite the wildfires we were still allowed to have campfires in designated rings.  Steffany and Jason Kay came along with us on this trip, which was great fun, and Steffany described to Reder how to build a fire.  He set it all up and then Daddy lit it.  He thought it was his responsibility to keep it going for the evening too. Here we are posing with our sissy in front of our handiwork:

Ruby took just a speck of a nap on the way to the campground that morning, so by dinnertime she was tuckered out.  She ate her food and then went off by herself and played toys, though we eventually spied her stretched out on this rock:

Look at this camping face!  Black soot and pizza pocket goo.  I should mention we had pizza pockets, pies, and smores for dinner.  Oh and chips...that Steffany brought chips.  I think the Daughenbaugh family ate 90% of that bag!

The campground was right on a stream filled with willows.  Who lives in willows??  Moose!  Jason Kay and Reder went and sat by the stream and listened and could hear this one breaking twigs, and could even hear her snorting.  We eventually saw there were 2, a mama and her baby!  This was just so cool.  They stayed there the entire time we were there.  In fact, the Kay's car where they were sleeping was probably just yards away from where these two were sleeping for the night!

Mama moose.  For some reason it surprised me she was so black-looking:

baby moose:

We were glad the Kay's could make it.  It's always fun to do things with them:

And then Ruby got the camera again, and look what happened.  A nice shot of her nose:

Of Steffany picking her nose (gosh sorry Steff couldn't resist):

Of Reder "cuggling" Steff.  I should say why...we kept hearing a really weird snorting/hooting sound.  We decided to sacrifice Jason Kay and he snuck off to see if he could figure out what it was.  While he was gone Reder got terrified that something got him, and that it was coming for us too...hence the cuggling. Jason eventually returned and said he thought it must be a bird of some sort.  Maybe an owl?  Do owls snort?

We didn't get the kids to sleep until 10 pm!  It takes forever for the sun to go down and until it did it was HOT in the camper.  Once they hit the pillow they were out until 8 am!!

Here we are eating a breakfast of oatmeal, blueberries, and toast.

This is Pac-Man rock.  Can you tell why??  There were rocks like this all over the place!

Jason and Steff headed out after breakfast as they had company coming.  We took a little walk, packed up everything, and took off not too long after them.  We stopped at "Whole Wheat Montana" (Reder coined that!) in Three Forks for lunch on the way home for a sandwich and a cinnamon roll.

When we got home Ruby for some reason decided we had to immediately get out the slip-n-slide she got for her birthday.  I set that up really quick, thinking that would keep them busy while Jas and I unloaded the car. But, turns out the kids weren't quite sure how it worked so if you had come to our house around 2 pm you would have discovered the whole Daughenbaugh family outback doing the slip-n-slide in their undies!  It was actually quite fun.  Good thing we don't have neighbors nearby!

What a fantastic weekend.  We'll have to do this again really soon!  Anybody wanna go camping??
